VOLUNTEER DAYS: 18TH & 25TH MARCH 2022

  • Laurelbank Farm 121 Middle Road Ballynahinch, Northern Ireland, BT24 7LS United Kingdom (map)

Do you want to spend a day at Laurelbank Farm helping us get set up for the growing season ahead?

This spring, we’re looking for volunteers to help plant an edible hedge, set up new vegetable beds in our field, put up a polytunnel, create some propagation benches from old pallets, build some new compost heaps and mulch some young trees. We might even find time to build a new dry stone wall!

There is no way we will finish (or even start) all this on the two dates in March, but we will be tackling what needs done most urgently on the day. It will be hard work, but hopefully rewarding.

Volunteer with us if you’d like to:

  • Meet like-minded people

  • Learn about organic vegetable growing

  • Learn about no dig / no till gardening

  • Spend time working with your hands and being active

  • Spend a few hours working outside, soaking up some vitamin D (or rain water)

  • Experience the simplicity and joy of growing things to eat

  • Enjoy a hearty, veggie lunch with others inspired by the best produce from the garden that day

If you’d like to spend some or all of the day in the kitchen with Erin, helping to make lunch for us all, then please book the ‘Working in the Kitchen’ option. (We sadly can’t all volunteer in the kitchen if it rains!).

Here are the details:
The time: From 9:30am to around 4pm on Friday 18th March or Friday 25th March 2022. (You can come to one date or both). From 9:30-10am we’ll be giving you a tour and briefing for the day ahead.
The place:
Laurelbank Farm, 121 Middle Road, Saintfield, Co. Down, BT24 7LS
The cost:
Free. The plan is that you don’t pay us and we don’t pay you! But please book your tickets in advance so we know how many to expect, and please let us know as soon as possible if you aren’t able to come for any reason – places are limited and we may have a waiting list.
The refreshments: We’ll serve a simple but hearty vegetarian lunch and there will be plenty of tea, coffee & water to help yourself to throughout the day.  (You’re welcome to bring your own snacks too)
Dietary Requirements: Lunch will be suitable for vegetarians but if you have any other dietary requirement please let us know when you book your place so we can plan the menu around your needs.

What to bring: Bring suitable clothing for the weather. We will be working outside even if it is raining. Bring sturdy, comfortable boots and bring gardening gloves, if you have them. Depending on the tasks planned for the day, we may email you in advance to request you bring something else if you can (a wheelbarrow or spade perhaps…) – check your junk mail if you haven’t heard from us.
